Flying Wedge - B & T

Flying Wedge Texas Pull Pizza

So we decided to give Flying Wedge a try..  we went to Quarry Park and ordered 2 pizzas in-person for take-out.

First of all, it seemed to take forever!  We left and went to Co-op to kill some time and it still took at least 15 minutes longer than promised to cook our pizzas.

We decided to go with the thin crust which is more like regular crust at most other pizza places.. it also had flax seed in it which was intriguing!

We tried the Texas Pull, B & T, Sicilian Express and Classic Pepperoni.  We had them in 1/2 and 1/2 pizzas so we were able to try 4 varieties but they also offer the ability to have 4 types where you can build your pizza from the ready made slices.

All in all I think it was a decent pizza but it didn’t leave me dying to go back..

The ratings are as follows (out of 5 - 20 possible points):

Crust: 3 (not crispy, not thin enough)

Sauce: 4 (needed more sauce)   Toppings: 4 (Options for toppings were more limited than I am used to but the actual toppings were high quality).

Cheese: 3 (nothing special but overall good)

Taxes, The Happiest Place on Earth and Special Requests…

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I finally decided to sort out my taxes. For the first time since becoming an employee, I regretted it!  I can’t believe how much of a tax hit you can take when you are most of the year as an employee and a few months as a contractor.  I won’t go into details about my actual tax owing but I can tell you, a glass of wine was definitely needed! I am hoping that the government looks at it and finds out I figured something wrong.. hoping hoping hoping! So much for having a savings account… sigh!

So it is Friday morning.. which in general seems to make people a little happier.. it is spring too, so that helps.. but this morning, Lauren and I were at Tim Hortons and it seemed like the happiest place on earth!

It is ‘roll-up-the-rim’ time and so the long Timmies line-ups are generally much longer.. so we are in line and a man from near the front of the line offers his spot to trade with a woman at the back of the line who was toting around 2 small children.  I think I can speak for everyone in the line-up when I say that we were all really impressed.  He not only gave up his spot, but he influenced the entire line-up with his infectious friendliness. I think it ended up affecting the entire place because suddenly people were holding doors open for one another etc.. it was pretty cool and I am glad to have wittnessed it.  In fact, I have really begun to lose faith in the Human Race.  We have so many horrible people living on this planet.  Our history is riddled with hatred and torture and murder.

It is really nice to know that somewhere on this little planet, on a tiny speck of land in Calgary… someone was kind!

Now it is lunch time… and I have been craving both egg and tuna salad sandwiches thanks to our catered lunch here at work yesterday.  Anyone who knows me well, knows that I am a variety nut and often, when I can I will ask for as many variations and options as possible.

So I went to Marcellos and asked for a sandwich.. 1/2 tuna, 1/2 egg.  So she starts to spread the tuna salad on a whole slice of bread and I try to explain that I want it spread on only half.. she doesn’t understand so she passes me on to another girl who claims to understand EXACTLY what I want.  So she begins to spread the egg on another whole slice of bread… so now I am envisioning how this sandwich will taste.  I can’t imagine it will be revolting.. so I just play along.. I get the lettuce and the cucumber and salt & pepper… Luckily she puts all the vegetables between layers.. and then folds it up and cuts it diagonally.  She hands me a tuna & egg salad sandwich on white bread with lettuce, cucumber, salt & pepper.  Hmmmm.. thanks! I brought it back to my desk… took a bite of the frankenwich… and its not THAT bad!  As a matter of fact, I would consider eating something like this again sometime.. but my craving was for each sandwich individually.  So I carefully separated the two halves, split the veggies evenly between them and ate them separately.

Inspiration and learning go hand in hand!

Feb 2nd:

I am home sick today (and was yesterday too) and I am pretty sure I am not supposed to be blogging.  I have been given the strictest of instructions to rest.

Of course my idea of rest includes a continuous flow of food shows on TV which is then followed by a whole lot of inspiration.

Today, I am watching some Food Network and a lot of Julia Child.  One thing I have learned from Julia Child right off the bat is that Julia isn’t perfect and some of the things she teaches, shows that sometimes procrastiation can lead to learning something new (sometimes soemthing good!) and that things don’t have to be as intricate as you might expect if you actually open her cookbook and browse her multitude of recipes and recipes within recipes.

Julia tends to cook very much like I do.. using instincts.. I am one of those wanna-be chefs.  I wanna be a chef but I don’t want to do all the schooling or work in a restaurant. As a matter of fact, my love for cooking has mostly developed over the last year and a bit.  Although I have always loved the idea of cooking, I went through a long stage where I avoided cooking altogether.

One thing I am learning about Julia is that sometimes, her recipes and methods are a bit of overkill.  I am watching her roast a chicken and the amount of string she uses to truss the chicken, then tie it to the spit and then tie on the bacon… oi.

I have started two lists.  One of all the foods I already love to cook on a regular basis and another list with all the foods/recipes I want to try.  Like any foodie, I plan my next meal well in advance (usually more than a day) and the meal usually involves me cooking.  I feel sorry for my boyfriend and sister because they rarely get to cook :P   Then again, I have always let them know that they are welcome to cook anytime.. they just need to let me know.  Tonight, my boyfriend is cooking.  I am not feeling well and although the inspiration is bubbling away in my head, my body isn’t up to the challenge.

Feb 4th:

So a couple days have passed since I last added to this blog.  Being sick has taken a lot out of me. This has been the longest week of all time! I think the thing that bugs me the most is that I got to spend the whole week at home, yet I have not been able to accomplish anything!

The worst thing actually, is that I just don’t have any motivation.  So I crave next week and the week after when I can get back to it and get some stuff done!  And get back into the kitchen :)
